Hingestix Practice Drumsticks Gripping Technique

Besides coordination, independence, a good sense of time and rhythm, drumming is all about stick technique. Good hand motion and stick technique can make the difference between one drummer having difficulty executing a pattern and another drummer being able to play something well (and easily), quickly and without effort.

Part of playing easily and without effort comes from holding the drumsticks loosely. That’s where HingeStix can help. Using the laws of gravity, HingeStix will improve your technique by enabling the drumstick to drop on its own rather than muscling the stick. The loose “swivel pads” at the fulcrum-point of the HingeStix allows a free floating bounce and rebound, which allows for smoother playing without fatigue.

Pro-tip:

Hold the HingeStix angled up with the tip of the stick about 8 inches off the drum pad and just let it drop while holding onto the swivel pads. Feel the bounce and try to get as many as drops as possible. Note that each subsequent drop will sound softer than the previous one, just like a ball freely bouncing on the ground. This exercise will help you acquire that loose feel in your grip as well a helping you develop a full and relaxed closed roll.
